Three questions you should ask your CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Programming Contractor

When choosing a CNC Programming Contractor, you need to ask them these 3 questions to ensure you get the best service.

  1. Are they using legitimate, licensed CAD/CAM software to program for your project?
  2. Do they have experience in multiple-axis machine programming?
  3. Can they provide solutions to the “what-ifs” that may occur on your project?

When choosing a CNC Programming Contractor, you need to ask them these 3 questions to make sure you get the best service.

1. Are they using legitimate, licensed CAD/CAM software to program for your project?

With the threat of bootleg software available online, it is imperative to have a process in place to make sure the contract company is using a legitimate software. Almost all platforms of programming software (Catia, Mastercam, Gibbs, NX, Vericut, Etc.) have illegal versions available. The consequences are extensive. Using these unlicensed versions of the software may result in a security breach, data loss or incompatibility which will, potentially, be harmful in a production environment. Such uses are considered as infringement and any illegal user may be held liable, both under civil and criminal law. If you are in possession of work completed on these unlicensed versions, you too are liable. If the contractor cannot prove the legitimacy of their licenses to you, you and your company are not covered.

2. Do they have experience in multiple-axis machine programming?

As we know, there is a major difference how a tape is written for different machines. If a programmer only has experience programming for a 4-axis machine, they are not going to be as efficient programming on a 5-axis platform (or vice-versa). The efficiency of the machine and run times can make or break the production of a machine shop. Make sure that they have a wide variety of knowledge that perfectly fits your project’s needs. Efficiency can save you a lot of money.

 3. Can they provide solutions to the “what-ifs” that may occur on your project?

As you know, changes occur more frequently than we desire in our industry; Engineering changes, tooling/fixture changes, or whatever wrench is thrown at us. Make sure the company you choose can handle the possible unknowns and come up with alternative solutions.
